Play Intensifies at Abu Dhabi Schools Champions
Swimming Kicked Off in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain in the nationwide multi-sports tournament

Abu Dhabi, UAE – February 6, 2020 – Play intensified during Week 7 of Abu Dhabi Schools Champions, organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council in partnership with the Ministry of Education, the Department of Knowledge and Education, and Inspiratus.

The week witnessed the kickoff of the swimming championships for the first time in the Capital Abu Dhabi at Zayed City’s Olympic swimming pool and at Brighton College in Al Ain.

In the girls swimming competition in Abu Dhabi, Zia Sagi, in Cycle 2 swimming, achieved the top score of 15:50 second in crawl, whereas Christelle Fegali, in Cycle 3, completed her challenge in 17:16 seconds. In Al Ain, Maryam Morsi in Cycle 2 achieved a time of 21:47 second in the butterfly movement, with Amina Al-Saad right behind her.

In other sports, starting with football playoffs in Abu Dhabi, Horizon Private School beat Gems Winchester School 1-0 in Cycle 2 competitions, whereas Abu Dhabi Indian School Al Wathba Branch beat Al Muneera Private School 1-0. International Community School defeated Alsoqoor School 3-1. As for Cycle 3 boys, International Community school beat Al Nahda National School 2-1.

In Cycle 3 girls, International Community School beat Virginia International Private School with a score of 3-0. Merryland International School beat Horizon Private School 5-0. Also in football, over at Al Ain Club in Cycle 2 boys, Al Ain Juniors School beat Al Hamdaniya School 1-0.

As for basketball playoffs in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, all teams kicked off their matches with a minute of silence honoring the memory of basketball legend Kobe Bryant and his daughter. In men’s competition Cycle 3, at Baniyas Club, Summit International School beat Horizon Private School 16-7. Merryland International School beat Al Suqoor Model School 20-0. The Model School defeated the Abu Dhabi Indian School Al Wathba Branch 20-0. In Al Ain, at Brighton College, Al Ain Juniors School defeated Future International Academy 24-0. Global English School Our Own English High School 11-10.

In the third week of girls’ gymnastics competitions, Zina Al Balushi from Al Bateen School achieved 9.4 points, while Zina Fahim from the Amity International School scored 9 points and Adah Shaju from Al-Raha International School scored 9.7 points.
Over in Athletics competitions, at the Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi, The Model School’s Anshil Yousaf and the Al Yazia Mubarak topped the League with exceptional performances.

Commenting on the progress of Abu Dhabi Schools Champions, Mr. Talal Al Hashemi, Abu Dhabi Sports Council’s Director of Abu Dhabi Schools Champions, said: “We will be reaching Week 8 of Abu Dhabi Schools Champions in Abu Dhabi which will take place over the coming weekend February 7 and 8. The competition has surpassed all expectations to date, positively impacting the sports, educational and social sectors across Abu Dhabi. Abu Dhabi Schools Champions reflects the essential role that schools sports plays in elevating the level of sports in the nation and in providing a pipeline of talent to local clubs.”

A groundbreaking multi-sports league to develop and empower youth sports and athleticism and embed healthy lifestyles among school children in Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Schools Champions brings together public and private school children to compete in popular sanctioned sports including football, basketball, volleyball, handball, and athletics, with gymnastics and swimming to follow at a later stage in the championship.
